Is your head going round and round with worry and anxiety? You can change your life when you can change your mind.
I’ve been going through a lot of worry and anxiety lately with some big life changes. Too-ing and fro-ing about a big life decision to move to the other side of the country.
My usual way of coping with worry and anxiety is to over-think. My head will often travel to the moon and back 10 times in one night. This makes me feel exhausted and ‘split’ like I’ve been torn into pieces.
I remember a really good mindfullness teacher saying to me years ago that instead of struggling with your thoughts, that you can change your relationship with the thoughts that trouble you.
How do you change your relationship with the thoughts that trouble you?
- Get out of your head and into your body. Eg: Shake your body or touch your toes
- Have something healthy to eat or a soothing hot drink to ‘loosen’ the mind
- You don’t have to believe every thought that comes into your conscious mind
- Recognise that you are more than the thoughts that trouble you and see that there are so many other aspects to yourself
- What you focus on expands in life, so bring your attention to what is working in your life
- Recognise your mind is sky-like in its nature. Thoughts come and go like weather patterns, although you are more than the changing weather patterns
- The ruminations slow down when you change your relationship with them.
- Watch and allow your thoughts, don’t identify with the worry
- Which mind will you identify with during these ruminations? The worry mind or your Wise/Divine mind
Your Wise/Divine mind is like the sky. It is your witness, your inner knowing, and your intuition. Your Wise/Divine mind is settled, strong and expansive. It is loving and compassionate. It is your anchor and makes room for all the changing weather patterns. If you’re just the weather patterns, you’re in for a bumpy ride. Weather comes and goes, although your Wise/Divine mind is rock-solid and is your centre.
This is an attitude of mindfulness, you become the mind-watcher.
